Jobhunting Tools

With the recent recession and dire unemployment rate in the US, you can see people coming up with new, creative and ingenious ways to promote themselves in order to find a job.

Example 1:

Kelly Kinney who printed her resume on her t-shirt after she was inspired by one that said "Unemployed"

Example 2:

Paul Nawrocki had been laid off at age 59 and was finding it extremely difficult to land a new job. He went "old-school" and stuck his resume on a sandwich board.

Example 3:

Aleksey Vayner, a Yale student who posted a video resume on YouTube. (Catch a snippet here)

More recently, I came across an article about a guy by the name of Alec Brownstein and it tugged my interest (and funny bones). He was a frustrated copywriter who wanted to find a job as a creative director. In his unhappy state, he used to google his own name at work for fun, and figured that other people did the same.

He searched for the top five creative directors in advertising, and bought their names on Google AdWords. His advertised message was: “Hey, [creative director’s name]: Gooogoling [sic] yourself is a lot of fun. Hiring me is fun, too [with a link to his website].”

A little shameless, but it worked! Four out of five of the creative directors contacted him and now he works at a big international advertising agency.

Inspiring isn't it? :)

Evil Google?

As tweeted by @mashable - Google’s Descent into Evil, Animated [VIDEO] - http://mash.to/2smfQ (strangely enough, mashable just retracted this tweet. hmm! did Google scare Pete Cashmore off?)

Brilliant! I wish I understood Mandarin, but you get the gist of it. I like how this Taiwanese news website makes the funniest(albeit sometimes nonsensical) parodies of American consumerism drama.

Jailbreaking

It sounds illegal. But it's not.

I'm talking about jailbreaking the iPhone 4. (See article here)

"jailbreaking" literally means "freeing it from the limitations imposed on it by AT&T (service provider) and Apple." Basically it allows you to do much more with the gadget in terms of having more apps and customizing the features on your iPhone. It even allows you to use a different service provider. (Hmm, isn't there something wrong with the iPhone then if everybody wants to add all these additional items?)

However, once you decide to jailbreak, it means that your warranty is void.

And lets face it. With Apple products, you really need the warranty because when that fancy gadget is broken (and it will, eventually - thanks to the faulty technology or your clumsy hands)...that warranty will come in handy. It'll be expensive to fix.

Are Apple users ever gonna see through the fog that is Apple's marketing ploy? Technology is ever evolving, it's true. But shouldn't Apple decide to put out a gadget that has all the amenities you need and will last for at least 3-5 years?

Take the iPad for example. Really, what is it for? Besides making your pictures and videos look pretty, it really has no use because there are no USB ports so you can't transfer your files or expand its memory capabilities. Plus, it's known to be bad for your posture as well.

Now i've opened a new can of worms! I am not completely rejecting Apple - in fact I used to have a Mac and know my way around it very well, I also own an iPod nano which I love to bits - I just detest their marketing strategy. It's clever, but dishonest.

What's red & white, and has wings?

A tomato being carried away by a white bird?

A devil disguising as an angel?

Good guesses but the answer you're looking for is

Air Asia :)

OK i know lame! But it got you guessing! Just so you know, I'm the Queen of Lame Jokes. Sigh!

Anyway, recently I flew on AirAsia for a family trip to Krabi, Thailand. I've taken discount airlines before and I'm a huge fan. I've taken many trips in the US via such medium (Southwest Airline is love!) because I used to visit my sister in San Francisco pretty often. Sometimes you can get a return ticket Orange County-SF for just about USD100. And various other trips for the same price, depending on your location.

America is the great land of choices, and I'm proud to say that Malaysia is fast becoming that as well. Competition encourages growth! I've never flown Firefly but it's good to know we have options other than MAS.

But with such growth, we should be prepared to accomodate needs and possibilities...For instance, my family and I arrived in KL(at the LCCT) from Krabi on Sunday July 1st to a massive influx of passengers. Lines everywhere and there were only...TWO autogates open. What the heck. Only after a good 20minutes after we stood in line, did an officer come to open the other autogate. And yet the line moved slowly. Isn't everybody's passports now equipped with the autogate chip? Shouldn't we have more autogates? Where's the logic and efficiency in this current system?

And when we finally got out of that, we weren't able to find luggage carts. We had to scour the entire baggage claim area to find just ONE. All the other passengers were in the same boat.

Do we blame the airline, or the airport management? In any case, this should be looked into. We wouldn't want any tourists visiting Malaysia to feel discouraged.

Negatives aside, in all other aspects I think Air Asia is doing a great job. Prompt service and surprisingly good in-flight food! I love the idea that "now everyone can fly" :) Traveling made easy.
